Ribera Alta

OROGRAPHY

Ribera Alta is the flattest production zone in the province of Badajoz, a vast area extending East from the meadows alongside the Guadiana river to the plains of La Serena region up to Castuera (near the border with Cordoba). Quaternary sediments left by the Guadiana river and its tributaries led to sandy soils. The average altitude here is 427m.

CLIMATE

The climate at Ribera Alta is continental with a moderate Atlantic influence.

GRAPE VARIETIES

Table grapes have a strong presence here in Ribera Alta. As for wine grapes, white Alarije and Borba are the most common, as well as red Tempranillo and some Garnacha.

The towns included in Ribera Alta production zone are: Aljucén, Benquerencia, Campanario, Carrascalejo, Castuera, La Coronada, Cristina, Don Alvaro, Don Benito, Esparragalejo, Esparragosa de la Serena, Higuera de la Serena, La Garrovilla, Guareña, La Haba, Magacela, Malpartida de la Serena, Manchita, Medellín, Mengabril, Mérida (on the right bank of the Guadiana river), Mirandilla, Monterrubio de la Serena, La Nava de Santiago, Navalvillar de Pela,Oliva de Mérida, Quintana de la Serena, Rena, San Pedro de Mérida, Santa Amalia, Trujillanos, Valdetorres, Valverde de Mérida, Valle de la Serena, Villagonzalo, Villanueva de la Serena, Villar de Rena, Zalamea de la Serena and Zarza de Alange.
