Tierra de Barros

OROGRAPHY

The region of Tierra de Barros (literally “Land of Clay”) is basically a flat area with fertile soils, rich in nutrients and a great capability to retain water. Its average altitude is 521m over the sea level.

CLIMATE

The climate in Tierra de Barros is dry, with high temperaturas in the Summer, amplified by the hot East wind. The annual rainfall here ranges between 350 and 450mm.

GRAPE VARIETIES

The most important grape varieties in Tierra de Barros are the white Cayetana Blanca and Pardina, both of them indigenous to this area, and the red Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet-Sauvignon. The white varieties Montua and Macabeo are also widely found here.

Tierra de Barros is situated in the centre of the province of Badajoz and it includes the following towns: Aceuchal, Ahillones, Almendralejos, Arroyo de San Serván, Azuaga, Berlanga, Calamonte, Corte de Peleas, Entrín Bajo, Feria, Fuente del Maestre, Granja de Torrehermosa, Higuera de Llerena, Hinojosa del Valle, Hornachos, La Morera, La Parra, Llerena, Maguilla (left bank of the Guadiana river) Nogales, Palomas, Puebla del Prior, Puebla de Reina, Ribera del Fresno, Salvatierra de los Barros, Santa Marta de los Barros, Torre de Miguel Sesmero, Torremegía, Valencia de las Torres, Valverde de Llerena, Villafranca de los Barros and Villalba de los Barros.
